Atul Kochhar to open Kanishka in Mayfair

The chef has teamed up with Tina English, the former commercial director of Cinnamon Club, to open Kanishka in the old 28-50 wine bar on Maddox Street.

It will be the first restaurant project for Kochhar since he parted ways with London’s Michelin-starred Benares last year after apologising for some controversial tweets.

Kanishka will focus on “lesser known” regions of Indian food, including the eastern Seven Sister States, with menu items including Kachela Maas – a Sikkim inspired venison tartare with mustard oil mayonnaise, naan crouton and onions – and pan-seared seafood dish Samundri Khazana Alleppey.

The restaurant will seat 127 covers spread across two floors, including a terrace and 12-cover garden room.

Over 50 types of whisky will be on offer in the bar, alongside cocktails such as the roast banana old fashioned, made from tandoor roasted banana with cinnamon, orange and pecan bitters, and maple.

“Kanishka is a very exciting project for us – it’s a great opportunity to continue to showcase Indian flavours alongside quality British produce, but also introduce London’s diners to the unique flavours of territories previously unexplored by Indian cuisine in the UK,” says Kochhar.
